St. George's Acceptable Use Policy

ST. George's Elementary Has the Right, But Not the
Obligation, to Monitor and Supervise All Computer Use

Computer Use Guidelines

In conjunction with the school Administration and the school's Technology Committee, the Network Administrator shall:

  • grant user accounts (at no cost to students) which will allow access to the network,

  • provide teacher supervision of students using the network,

  • allow use of specific computer applications as decided by the school,

  • monitor the internet sites being used and visited,

  • monitor random samples of internal and external e-mail, and

  • revoke user accounts, when and if necessary

Student Responsibilites

The computer network at St. George's Elementary exists to be used for educational purposes only ~ and is a privilege rather than a requirement of learning in this school. Students are required to follow these guidelines in order to keep this privilege:

A. Care of Equipment

Computers are expensive and fragile pieces of equipment. Extreme care must be taken to ensure that they are not damaged.

B. Appropriate Sites

  • searching and browsing shall be limited to appropriate educational sites.

  • students shall not access or attempt to access sites containing prohibited information (ie. pornographic, racist, vulgar, or otherwise offensive material).

  • if prohibited site is accessed accidentally, a student must notify the teacher or Network Administrator immediately.

  • students who access, or attempt to access, sites containing prohibited information will have privileges revoked and may face other disciplinary action.

C. Copyright

Accessing or storage of copyrighted software or information for which the school does not have a license is forbidden.

D. Security

  • Students are responsible for their own accounts. System security relies on maintaining the secrecy of the users' passwords. If passwords are known by others, students must notify the Network Administrator and change their current password.

  • Use of the account by anyone other than the registered account owner is prohibited. if this occurs both parties will have their computer privileges suspended.

  • Students shall ensure that their accounts are used for lawful purposes only, and that no material is transmitted which is inappropriate or infringes on the rights of privacy.

  • Students should never post personal information about themselves (address, phone number, or picture, etc.)

  • Computer users must LOG OFF their network accounts before leaving a computer.

  • Accessing or attempting to access any computer, network or resource for which a student DOES NOT have authorization is strictly prohibited and will lead to immediate and permanent revocation of computer privileges.

E. Language

  • Language used in e-mail is to be of the same standard as other forms of communication; profane, harassing or otherwise inappropriate language is forbidden.

  • Harassment of other users in any way is forbidden.

  • Use of anonymous e-mail sites or any other method of disguising sources of e-mail is forbidden. In accordance with direction from the Avalon East School Board, St. George's Elementary has established a computer network linked to the Internet for the enrichment of learning. The school has also developed guidelines for the acceptable use of this network by students.
